We're small enough to make BIG changes.

FortySeven Main Street, Inc. is a small community dedicated to enriching the lives of male residents coping with mental illness.

We are licensed by the State of Vermont as a TCR (Therapeutic Community Residence.) For over forty years, we have provided quality care to people in need of guidance and/or supervision due to mental illness.

We belong to the American Residential Treatment Association, ARTA.  Their website can be visited here.

FortySeven Main Street, Inc. was founded in April 1969 by parents who had a daughter coping with mental illness.

Our sunny, spacious house is located in the lovely, small Vermont town of Castleton, minutes from Castleton University. We are also close to Green Mountain College and Community College of Vermont.

Besides our main house, we offer a "step down" program of supervised apartments for five residents, as well as individual apartments in the community for residents who are ready for more independence and increased responsibility.

We own 64 acres in nearby West Haven, where residents work on carpentry and gardening projects. We grow tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, leeks, raspberries
and blackberries... and our garlic has won Blue Ribbons
at the Vermont State Fair! We also have blueberries and grapes. There are pastures for our sheep, horse and ponies.

The West Haven property is an integral part of our program. There is a trail for  walking, cross country skiing or snow shoeing. In the spring we tap maple trees and make our own maple syrup. In the summer we garden and barbecue. In the fall we plant garlic and cut firewood to boil sap in the spring.

Not everyone will choose to work in the garden. Those who choose to housekeep plan
our menus, and cook and bake, often using our homegrown
produce
. Others will opt for continuing their education as their primary focus. CCV (Community College of Vermont) in Rutland or Castleton University are both good options.
